What a Shelter Cat Helped Me Understand About Myself
How animal communication helped me discover a Soul Lesson

Do you feel sad when you read Facebook posts or see ads about animals who have been in a shelter for a long time? Animals who might have once had a home but are now living in a shelter and waiting again for a forever home?
I do.
And it has been troubling me because I didn’t know what to do with these feelings. As much as I might want to, I can’t bring home every animal who touches my heart.
This is my story about how I gained some clarity in this situation. With the help of a shelter cat and animal communication, I discovered the spiritual or life lesson (also known as Soul Lesson) the animal was teaching me to help me grow. Your animals are teaching you Soul Lessons, too.
Why Sophie’s story affected me so deeply
I read a post from the shelter where I adopted my two cats, Benjamin and Fritz. The post was about Sophie, a cat who was there while I was ‘courting’ my two fellas more than a year ago. Sophie was adopted from the shelter as a kitten and then surrendered back more than a year ago.
Her story just broke my heart.
Why? Because I assumed she was abandoned, unwanted, and rejected. She deserved to have a loving home of her own. I knew she was treated well at the shelter, but in my mind, that wasn’t the same as having a place of your own. And someone to love you. To know you belong somewhere and to someone.
I realized what the shelter staff wrote about Sophie triggered my inner little girl’s feelings about not having a ‘home of her own,’ about feeling ‘abandoned’ and ‘forsaken’ and alone. I was crying, not just for Sophie, but for myself.
Sophie’s situation mirrored some things within myself that I still needed to understand and heal. I had been aware of these feelings for years, but they periodically resurfaced, giving me an opportunity for deeper insight and growth.
Now I understand I feel emotional when I see cats who have been in a shelter for a long time because I assume they have not been adopted because they are “unwanted.” I feel this for the animal because a part of me also knows what it feels like to feel unwanted.
I was grateful to finally understand what my feelings about these cats had been trying to tell me. Now I wondered how Sophie felt about her situation and what she might want to say to me. As I am an animal communicator, I connected with Sophie for a personal conversation, hoping her perspective might help me understand and process what I was feeling.
Seeing Sophie and myself differently
I intuitively connected with Sophie and was surprised and pleased to find my two cats, Benjamin and Fritz, joined us for the conversation. Sophie communicated that, from her Soul’s perspective, she saw her situation differently than I did. Yes, it would be nice to be in a home, but she is content where she is and knows this is part of her life journey.
She reminded me about Reiki, the universal life force energy, and that one of the six pillars of the Let Animals Lead® method is to see every animal in their inner perfection.
When I viewed Sophie in her perfection, I felt more positive and hopeful. The sadness and pity I had felt before were gone. This new feeling was more powerful.
Through our conversation, I understood Sophie to be reminding me that seeing her as perfect and whole doesn’t mean I shouldn’t take action to help in some tangible way. I also understood her to be saying that she would like me to offer her some Reiki energy, but to be mindful of my reason for doing so. Offer it out of love, not as an attempt to fix her.
Seeing Sophie in her glorious inner beauty feels so expansive and hopeful. From this perspective, I can make better decisions about how I respond to Sophie and other animals, because I come from a place of love and gratitude. I will also love and take better care of myself when I see that ‘inner perfection’ in myself.
Final message
Why did my cats Benjamin and Fritz join me for the conversation? We had not intuitively connected in a while, and they just wanted to be with me. Plus, they know Sophie from the shelter. Sophie’s story had also stirred up my own feelings of being unwanted, so having Benjamin and Fritz choose to join the conversation left me feeling especially loved and wanted. They said they love connecting with me this way and want to be part of my work as an animal communicator. This is a way we can participate in something together.
Before I ended the conversation, I received one final message from Sophie:
Remind people about the Soul Lessons. Soul Lessons are so important. That is why we [animals] are here.
Thank you, Sophie, for helping me understand my Soul Lesson. And yes, I will remind people about the importance of Soul Lessons.
The animals in our lives can help us notice feelings, assumptions, and experiences we might otherwise overlook. When something about an animal’s situation touches you deeply, consider what that reaction might be inviting you to understand, both about the animal and about yourself.
